G-8 to Give $40B in 'Arab Spring' Aid

International lenders and wealthy countries are aiming to give $40 billion to Arab nations trying to establish true democracies, officials announced at the Group of Eight summit Friday. The cash will go to supporting democracy in Egypt and Tunisia, setting an example for repressive regimes in Syria and Libya. Prime ministers from Tunisia and Egypt were at the summit to request aid, since uprisings earlier this year scared off tourists and investors. Over the next three years, $20 billion will come from international development banks, $10 billion will come from Persian Gulf countries, and bilateral aid from other nations will account for the rest.
