A Connecticut woman who was attacked by a chimpanzee in 2009 received a face transplant Friday—only a month after undergoing a full face and hand transplant, which was unsuccessful. Charla Nash, 57, was attacked by a neighbor’s 200-pound chimp—the animal ripped off her hands, lips, nose, and eyelids before police shot and killed the animal. After the attack, Nash’s eyes were gone and she had only a small opening instead of a mouth where she could take in pureed food and could barely talk. This was the third full face transplant ever performed in the U.S., and the first hand transplant, although hands have been re-attached.
