There are wild hamsters? France may be fined for up to $24.6 million by the European Union's highest court for failing to care for the Great Hamster of Alsace, the last wild hamster species in Western Europe. There are only 800 of the hamsters left in France, living in Alsace along the Rhine. The hamsters eat grass and alfalfa crops, but they have been replaced by corn. This, combined with urbanization, dropped the hamster population to 200 in 2009, prompting the lawsuit.
