Acting ATF Director Ken Melson is expected to resign soon under pressure, senior law enformencement officials tell CNN. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is currently under fire for a bungled gun-running sting. The operation, dubbed “Fast and Furious,” was designed to build criminal cases against Mexican gun traffickers but went awry, putting hundreds of weapons into the hands of criminals who used them in murders. Melson is said to be resigning within days, and Attorney General Eric Holder is reportedly interviewing a replacement.
