The Thai government conceded the election Saturday as the opposition party—despite its leader, Thaksin Shinawatra, living in exile—prepared to take power Monday. The party, now led by Thaksin's sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, prepared for her to take over as the country's first female Prime Minister. Her brother said in an interview from Dubai that he wanted to return to Thailand, “but will wait for the right moment.” Both sides have promised to abide by the election's results, but the last few years have seen violent clashes between the two groups. The military, which ousted Thaksin in a 2006 coup, has promised not to intervene this time.
