Those tuning into CBS in the Boston area on July 4th were treated to a fantastic fireworks display that, as it turns out, was fake. Viewers began calling into the Boston Globe on Friday to say it was impossible that the fireworks could have appeared over famous city landmarks like Fenway Park, Quincy Market, and the State House, when they were launched in the opposite direction from the Charles River. Boston-based executive producer David Dugar admitted Thursday that they had shot the landmarks before and superimposed the fireworks into the video footage, but defended the fake-out because it was entertainment rather than news. He likened the altered footage to the show Boston Legal, which occasionally uses scenes from Boston though it is shot in Hollywood.
