Rupert Murdoch’s papers are beginning to push back: News International has denied Gordon Brown’s allegations that The Sun illegally obtained his son’s medical records. The paper broke the story in 2006 that Brown’s son, Fraser, has cystic fibrosis; Brown included the story as one of several examples of what he called “disgusting work” from News International targeting him and his family. "We are able to assure the Brown family that we did not access the medical records of their son, nor did we commission anyone to do so,” News International said in a statement. "The story The Sun ran about their son originated from a member of the public whose family has also experienced cystic fibrosis.” The company also claims that Brown consented to the article’s publication, after reporters and editors approached him with the story.
