Just as it seemed the violence in Syria couldn’t get worse, security forces killed 29 people on Friday— more bloodshed in a single day than the country has seen in weeks. Shootings occurred in some of the country’s most fractious regions, including Homs, Damascus, and Hama. The crackdown in Syria has continued to escalate, despite calls from President Obama and other United Nations leaders for an end to President Bashar al-Assad’s tyrannical reign. The U.N. says more than 2,600 people have been killed by government forces since the uprising began six months ago.
