Could this finally be the end of Muammar Gaddafi? Libyan rebels say they've captured Sirte, the birthplace of the ousted Libyan leader and his last coastal enclave. The Misrata military council says they have captured the entrances to the city and the town center. The rebels initially encountered resistance from loyalists firing rockets and mortars, but by the end of the day loyalists were holed up in the headquarters of an insurance company and in villas along the beachfront. Still, a Sirte rebel who escaped to join with the assault says loyalists have formed militias within the city. Sirte's capture also opens the road from Benghazi to Tripoli.
