New revelations on the News of the World scandal: Neil Wallis, the former deputy editor of the tabloid who went on to work as a Scotland Yard police consultant, was paid more than £25,000—or roughly $38,550—by News International during 2009 and 2010 to give the paper “crime exclusives,” including details of police investigations. Wallis left the Metropolitan Police last September after The New York Times published allegations of phone hacking, which ultimately led to his arrest in July. The Telegraph reports that News International paid Wallis up to £10,000 per story. Scotland Yard leaked his billing records to The Telegraph, which were obtained by detectives investigating the NotW hacking scandal.
