Revolutionary forces in Libya fought to take Muammar Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte on Saturday. Even though revolutionary forces captured Tripoli in August, many well-armed Gaddafi loyalists remain in stronghold like Sirte, Bani Walid, and other southern towns. Libya’s new leaders need to capture the cities in order to solidify control over the country. Many of the fighters involved came from the city of Misrata, and they are using some of the urban battle tactics learned there in the assault on Sirte. One fighter said, “When we fought in Misrata it was all new to us. Now we’re fine in a war. We know exactly what to do.” Revolutionary fighters unsuccessfully tried to take the city last weekend in a battle that left 25 dead and dozens wounded.
