The University of California, Berkeley, College Republicans caused a national uproar after throwing a bake sale on Tuesday that priced items according to race, gender, and ethnicity. The satirical event, which kicked off at 10 a.m. at the campus’s Sproul Plaza and immediately led to protests, is being called the “Increase Diversity” bake sale, and was held in protest of Gov. Jerry Brown’s recent bill that called for California’s state universities to consider race, ethnicity, and gender in student admissions as long as no preference is given. The bake sale offered five pricing levels for different races and a 25-cent discount for women. After being advertised on Facebook and other social media, the event drew criticism nationwide for being racist—but also drew many people strongly defending it.
