Pity for Rick Perry following his debate meltdown Wednesday night has spanned the ideological spectrum, but Texas Monthly’s Paul Burka isn’t having any of it. Yes, he says, the performance was “humiliating beyond belief,” but as a Texan, he’s unwilling to forgive the damage Perry has wrought on his home state. “He and his pals clamped an ideological stranglehold on the state government for ten years,” erecting tollbooths instead of embracing a gas tax, passing a dysfunctional business tax, and creating a structural deficit in the state budget. As far as Burka can tell, Perry’s presidential campaign is over—and he deserves it.
