Women were on the frontlines of Egypt’s rebellion against dictator Hosni Mubarak, but they are not getting much of a voice in post-revolution politics. Young women, both those who wear traditional Islamic dress and those who do not, are expressing distress that politicians are campaigning on mandating the hijab (veil) and banning certain types of clothing. One woman said she would never support a politician “who would dare tell a woman what is appropriate. That is un-Islamic.”
