Perhaps the most unexpected response to the Occupy Wall Street crackdown in Zuccotti Park has been the uniform optimism expressed by liberal commentators. The Daily Beast's Michelle Goldberg says that the movement needed to separate itself from the increasingly sketchy scene in lower Manhattan anyway: “It was as if the Occupy movement had gone from Summer of Love to Altamont in the span of 60 days.” Meanwhile, in the New York Daily News, columnist Harry Siegel says the aggressive police eviction “gave purpose to a broader movement that has lately seemed adrift.”
