“What happened yesterday at the United Nations was a travesty,” U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday, referring to Russia’s and China’s vetoes of a Security Council draft resolution that would have called on Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad to step down amid a brutal crackdown on dissent. “Faced with a neutered Security Council, we have to redouble our efforts outside of the United Nations with those allies and partners who support the Syrian people’s right to have a better future,” she said. She called on other nations to tighten sanctions against Assad’s regime, and to expose states that continue to fund and send weapons to Syria.
