The editors of the conservative National Review magazine are ready for Newt Gingrich to give up his presidential aspirations and defer to Rick Santorum. In an editorial this morning, they argue that “Gingrich's intellectual talents should make him a resource for any future Republican president. But it would be a grave mistake for the party to make someone with such poor judgement and persistent unpopularity its presidential nominee.” The editors aren’t quite sure whether Gingrich is still in this because he thinks he can be president or because he is too proud to drop out. Either way, they think he should step aside and endorse Rick Santorum. “It isn’t yet a Romney-Santorum contest, but it could be headed that way,” they write. “We hope so.”
