The deadly riot at Mexico’s Apodaca prison was cover for the escape of 30 members of the notorious Zeta drug cartel. The riot left 44 inmates dead. “Without a doubt there was premeditation," said Gov. Rodrigo Medina. Medina said all the dead prisoners were members of the rival Gulf cartel. Four top prison officials and the 18 guards on duty have been fired and are being investigated for complicity in the massacre. Many of Mexico’s prisons are run by drug cartels. Two years ago, officials at a Durango prison were arrested for giving guns and cars to inmates who were allowed out every night to kill their Zeta rivals. Mexico is offering an $800,000 reward for information about the most recent escapees.
