Ann Romney took a page out of her husband’s playbook and tried, somewhat awkwardly, to relate to everyday Americans. When asked on Fox News whether the extremely wealthy family would be able to understand the struggles of most Americans, Ann responded, “You know, we can be poor in spirit. I don’t even consider myself wealthy, which is an interesting thing. It can be here today and gone tomorrow.” The candidate’s wife’s comments can obviously be mocked when taken out of context—Mitt’s net worth is about $200 million—but Ann was clearly trying to explain that being wealthy is not her defining characteristic. “How I measure riches,” she goes on to say, “is by the friends I have and the loved ones I have and the people that I care about in my life, and that’s where my values are and that’s where my riches are.”
