Newsweek photos won 15 awards from the prestigious American Photography annual competition on Friday. In the the competition's 28th year, over 8,100 submissions were received from around the world. Of those submissions, only 342 winners were chosen, including Newsweek’s 15. Among the most memorable are the portrait of Michele Bachmann shot by Chris Buck, two breathtaking Libya war photos by the late Tim Hetherington, and the gripping photo of an Afghan soldier wearing a plastic bag on his head during a dust storm captured by Balazs Gardi. Other Newsweek winners included choices from: a dazzling portrait shoot of Angelina Jolie, images of refugees along the Libyan and Tunisian border, and photos of scenes from the horrific Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
