The New York Times claimed on Saturday that the chain had covered up evidence of corruption after a 2005 preliminary investigation found widespread bribery. Further, the Times alleges that it took no disciplinary action to those involved. Wal-Mart’s original internal investigation found more than $24 million in suspicious payments, presumably bribes to obtain building permits across the country. A current New York Times examination discovered that the investigation was abandoned in “a struggle that pitted the company’s much publicized commitment to the highest moral and ethical standards against its relentless pursuit of growth.”
