Human-rights activists said that at least four people were killed Thursday when Syrian security forces raided a university in the city of Aleppo. A local activist said security forces and armed pro-government men fired tear gas and live ammunition at Aleppo University students who were staging a protest to call for an end to President Bashar al-Assad’s rule, and then the forces raided the dormitories. The apparent violence comes just hours before Syrian officials are scheduled to meet with United Nations special envoy Kofi Annan, who is in Damascus to try to negotiate a cease-fire to the yearlong crackdown by Bashar’s government.
