Ahead of their runoff election this summer, Texas Republican Senate candidates will debate each other—in Spanish. Tea Partier Ted Cruz challenged Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst to five public debates, but it was Dewhurst who suggested at least one of the debates be held in Spanish. Cruz, a second-generation Cuban-American, agreed but told Univision, “I would welcome a debate with Dewhurst in any form, but I think we would have a better debate if we did the debate in English.” Dewhurst, on the other hand, learned the language after a CIA assignment to Bolivia in the 1970s. While he said he was almost fluent upon returning from that trip, he admits he is now “rusty” though “comfortable talking in Spanish.”
