In the wake of the federal government’s approval that 50 different types of cancer be covered by a $4.3 billion Sept. 11 health fund, experts have claimed there’s no scientific evidence that exposure to toxic dust in the wake of the terrorist attacks caused even one type of cancer. Furthermore, they’re concerned that the coverage for cancer could take money away from those suffering from illnesses that were empirically linked to toxic exposure during and after 9/11, like asthma and variants of lung disease. Dr. John Howard, the director of the federal health agency that announced cancer coverage, declined to comment.
