Turkey said it would take “necessary steps” in action against Syria after that country shot down one of Turkey’s F-4 fighter jets Friday. “It is not possible to cover over a thing like this. Whatever is necessary will be done,” Turkish President Abdullah Gül told state media. Syria released a statement Friday saying that it was responsible for shooting down the NATO country’s aircraft after Turkish pilots steered it into Syrian airspace. The plane was reportedly shot down over waters about a mile from the Syrian coast. Fighting in Syria has strained the relationship between the two countries over the past year, with violence occasionally spilling over the Turkish border.
