Missy Franklin, the 17-year-old swimming phenom from Aurora, Colo., won her first gold Monday in London—single-handedly rejuvenating a flailing U.S. swim team. Franklin clinched the 100m backstroke, coming from behind in the final 30 meters to out-touch Australia’s Emily Seebohm by just 0.35 seconds. Japan’s Aya Terakawa took bronze. More impressive: Franklin swam her gold-winning race just 11 minutes after competing in the semis of the 200m freestyle, a lightning-fast turnaround. Team U.S.A.’s Matt Grevers and Nick Thoman also won the gold and silver, respectively, in the men’s 100m backstroke Monday.
