French City Erupts in Riots

French youth in the northern city of Amiens erupted in riots Monday night, with more than 100 people clashing with police. At least 16 police officers were injured in the clashes, where some rioters threw fireworks and large objects. French President François Hollande dispatched a top minister to Amiens, and Hollande pledged to restore order to the town—and said the upcoming budget would include additional resources for police. The district of Amiens is known for its poverty, and officials suggested Monday’s riots began after police arrested a man for dangerous driving.
