A groundbreaking study on a common form of lung cancer has found that more than half of the kinds of tumors that afflict patients could be targeted by drugs that either are in development or are already on the market. The study of squamous-cell lung cancer may herald a new era in cancer treatment in which cures are directed toward each cancer’s particular genetic makeup. The study was conducted in coordination with the National Institutes of Health’s Cancer Genome Atlas and drew on recent progress in DNA sequencing technologies.
