Finally there’s a reassuring development in the U.S. meningitis outbreak. Public-health officials said on Thursday that there is “light at the end of the tunnel,” pointing to findings from the Centers for Disease Control that confirm the majority of those exposed to potentially contaminated steroid injects have passed the period of highest risk. The risk of death or stroke from meningitis dissipates 42 days after exposure. The contaminated medication issued by the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts was recalled in late September. Thus far 328 cases and 24 deaths have been blamed on the meningitis outbreak.
