Women apparently need not apply. The main opposition group in Syria elected an all male leadership body early Thursday morning, prompting outrage from its female members and rebukes from international powers. Several members of the Syrian National Council demanded that women be retroactively added to the 40-member leadership panel. Made up of exiles and influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood, the council has been heavily criticized as ineffective. The U.S. has stated it wants a more diverse but unified opposition group to challenge President Bashar al-Assad. American diplomats have reiterated that the United States won’t intervene militarily.
