The Food and Drug Administration has a very special Valentine's Day surprise for the visually impaired. For the first time ever, a new treatment has been approved that will give blind people limited vision. This exciting new device—which involves something called the "artificial retina"—will give some the ability to detect things like stove burners, cars, or people in front of them, and crosswalks on a street. In some cases, patients who receive the artificial retina may also be able to detect oversized numbers or letters.
