After a lifetime disrupting the media landscape, Rupert Murdoch has his eyes set on one final prize. Today, Fox will announce a new network, Fox Sports 1. It will be what The New York Times calls Murdoch’s white whale—a national cable sports network to compete with ESPN. The new network will carry a variety of sports broadcast (including U.F.C.) and also have studio shows (even one with Regis Philbin). The market for a new sports network is seen as quite tough however: ESPN dominates TV and online, NBC and CBS also have their own sports channels, and sports leagues have created their own networks.
