After touting its identification of Sunil Tripathi as a suspect in the Boston bombings, Reddit is now doing major damage control for its crowd-sourcing blunder. The moderator of the “FindBostonBombers” subreddit has submitted a statement apologizing to the missing Brown University student’s family and everyone else who passed along the misidentification. “This event shows exactly why the no personal information until confirmation rule is in place,” the statement reads. “Out of respect for Tripathi and his family, I ask that users here please remove any and all links about him.” Now, the subreddit HelpFindSunilTripathi has been set up in the hopes that smearing Sunil will, at the very least, improve the chances of finding him.
