Ryan Gosling, it turns out, is not infallible. The walking Prince Charming debuted his new film, Only God Forgives, in which he reteams with Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn, at Cannes, but the typical accolades Gosling usually receives were replaced by boos. The hyperviolent film reportedly inspired walkouts, pans from critics, and actual boos as it screened. In the film, Gosling plays a brooding drug dealer seeking retribution for the murder of his brother. A typical review, this one from Hollywood Elsewhere: “hyperviolent, ethically repulsive, sad, nonsensical, deathly dull, snail-paced, idiotic, possibly woman-hating, visually suffocating, pretentious.”
