The governor of Egypt's Luxor province has resigned after his new role sparked controversy across the nation, officials said Sunday. Tensions flared when Adel Mohamed al-Khayat was appointed governor last week, anger that stemmed from his connection to an Islamist group that killed 58 tourists in a deadly 1997 attack. Khayat denies participating in the attack or having knowledge of it. "We will not accept that one drop of blood be spilt because of a position that I did not personally aspire to at any time." He reportedly made the decision after consulting with his party, who told him to resign for "the sake of Egypt."
