A psychology professor at Illinois’s Millikin University who shot and killed his entire family when he was 16 years old is being permitted to continue teaching at the university despite the recent revelations, administrators said Tuesday. James St. James used a .22-caliber rifle to shoot his father twice in the chest, his teenage sister in the chest and face, and his mother once in the chest and twice in the face in 1967. Though St. James admitted to the crimes at the time, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity, spent six years at a mental institution, changed his name, and earned a doctoral degree in psychology. “Given the traumatic experiences of his childhood, Dr. St. James’ efforts to build his life and obtain a successful professional career have been remarkable,” said a statement from administrators.
