After 36 hours searching blindly through what was left of a submarine that had that exploded and sank in Mumbai on Wednesday, divers emerged with the bodies of three crew members, the remains so badly disfigured that DNA will have to be used to identify them. The state of both the vessel and the bodies led Indian Navy officials to the “firm conclusion that finding any surviving personnel within the submarine is unlikely.” Eighteen crew members were aboard at the time of the blast, the cause of which is unknown. The submarine was described as being “in great shape” by a researcher who visited a day before.
