Residents of Kagoshima, Japan, were forced to don masks, raincoats, and umbrellas to avoid the ash raining down from an eruption at Sakurajima volcano. There were no reported injuries, but a smoke plume billowed 3 miles into the air, and lava seeped about half a mile away from the volcano's fissure Sakuramjima. The explosion took place roughly 6 miles from the city. Though this isn't an unusual occurence, the Japan Meteorological Agency doesn't expect a larger eruption at this point.
