A 14-year-old boy was shot in the courtyard of the housing complex where he lived Wednesday, making him the 10th homicide victim in Newark in just 10 days, Police Chief Samuel DeMaio said. DeMaio said most of the recent homicides in New Jersey—Trenton broke its annual homicide record this summer with 32 by the end of August—have been in the same district in South Newark. He said about half are believed to be related to drug trafficking. "It's just kind of a random spark-up," he said. "There's been no change in the deployment strategy we used all summer."
