Reddit on Monday banned a section of its site that had been dedicated to finding additional suspects in the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police said they believed that there could be another suspect, causing a Subreddit (a section of the popular online community) to pop up. Reddit’s Erik Martin said the section had been banned because it encouraged the posting of personal information, which violated the site’s rules. In the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing in April, Reddit had become a gathering place for information about the suspects—but misinformation spread that a missing Rhode Island college student, Sunil Tripathi, was involved. Tripathi’s body was later discovered, and Reddit apologized for enabling the posts.
