Forget castles in the sky—ice is cooler. Researchers from multiple universities in the UK discovered 820-foot high channels underneath an ice shelf in Antarctica—passages that are equivalent in height to the Eiffel tower. The channels, which were revealed through radar and satellite images of the Flichner-Ronne Ice Shelf in West Antarctica., were formed from water flowing underneath the ice and over land into the ocean. The location suggests that water flows out into the ocean using something akin to "ice rivers." Findings from the project—published Monday in an online journal—will help experts predict how the ice will melt.
