While you’re enjoying Tom Hanks’s latest (and rumored Oscar-worthy performance) Captain Phillips, keep this in mind: the film may have taken liberties with the truth. Real members of the crew told the New York Post on Sunday that the eponymous captain wasn’t a “big leader” as he is portrayed in the film. “No one wants to sail with him,” said one anonymous crew member, who revealed that he was alarmed by Phillips behavior. “He was real arrogant.” Phillips was the captain of the Maersk Alabama when pirates hijacked the vessel in March 2009 off the coast of Somalia. Phillips has admitted he received email warnings about pirate activity, and at least one crew member said Phillips insisted on going back to the original route after a close run-in with pirates before they were taken hostage.
