William D. Swenson, 34-year-old former Army captain, was presented with the nation’s highest military honor by President Obama on Tuesday. As a trainer and mentor with the Afghan National Security Forces, Swenson was involved in a drawn out battle against the Taliban that left five Americans, a translator, and 10 Afghan soldiers dead. During the battle, Swenson risked his life to rescue the dead and injured. The sixth living member of the military from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan to receive the Medal of Honor, Swenson’s initial medal nomination was lost. Recent recipient Marine Cpl. Dakota Meyer was also in the battle. Amazing footage of Swenson’s heroic actions was captured by a video camera on his helmet.
