Although longtime anchor Dan Rather played a historic role in covering President Kennedy’s assassination and then spent 44 years with the network, CBS News won’t include him in its 50th-anniversary coverage of the monumental event. Rather was part of initial arrangements to cover Kennedy’s Dallas visit and went on to serve as CBS’s top anchor for 24 years until a sensitive story and messy lawsuit forced him to leave in 2006. “I held off doing anything for anybody else for a while, thinking I may be asked to do something [for CBS],” Rather said. “I can’t say I had any reason for that hope.” He will instead appear on NBC’s Today show for the November 22 anniversary.
