A day after the Philippines suffered through Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest typhoons to ever make landfall, the Red Cross estimated that over 1,000 people were killed in one city alone (Tacloban in central Leyte province), along with 200 in Samar. Casualty reports are expected to rise sharply from the storm, which is now headed for Vietnam. Rescue workers are struggling to reach those in need, despite roads that are flooded or blocked with debris. Witnesses describe bodies covered in plastic lining the streets and cars piled atop each other. Haiyan hit land with 195 mph winds and about one million people were evacuated and took shelter in 37 provinces.
