Google and Microsoft will block images of child sexual abuse by creating a new algorithm that will prevent illegal search results, the companies announced on Monday. The new algorithm will block the 100,000 search items that once showed images of child sexual abuse—and a warning will come up that the user was trying to access illegal content. The new restrictions will apply to all English-speaking search engines, and they will expand over the next six months to 150 other languages. Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt also said changes are in store at YouTube: engineers have created new technology to identify videos by child abuse predators. The news comes on the heels of the arrests of nearly 400 in Toronto last week in a massive child-pornography sting.
