The U.S. Supreme Court said Tuesday that it will not intervene to stop a restrictive abortion law in Texas, leaving the law in effect until the Fifth Circuit Court goes ahead with a planned appeal hearing in January. “This is good news for the unborn and for women,” Texas Gov. Rick Perry said after the decision. The law, which will effectively close abortion clinics in much of the state, has been a lightning rod in the abortion debate—especially after State Senator (and current gubernatorial candidate) Wendy Davis filibustered it for 11 hours in June. The decision came the same day that voters in Albuquerque, New Mexico, rejected an initiative that would have banned abortion after 20 weeks.
