After allegations were made that former French President Nicolas Sarkozy had accepted illegal money from former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, judges ordered his phone tapped. According to Le Monde, the recordings uncovered evidence that Sarkozy was tampering with the legal system by having a senior prosecutor leak him confidential information about other inquiries into his past deeds. Sarkozy’s lawyer responded, saying there was “no attempt to pervert the course of justice and in due course this monstrous violation will be shown to have been a political affair." In 2011, Saif al-Islam, one of Gaddafi’s sons, accused Sarkozy of taking millions of the dictator’s money.
