Before the nationwide outrage over a “religious liberty” law that passed Arizona’s legislature and was subsequently vetoed by Gov. Jan Brewer, her top aides consulted with its proponent. Starting in January, the Center for Arizona Policy met to make changes to the bill, which would have allowed businesses to refuse service to homosexuals in the name of “religious liberty.” According to a Brewer aide, the meetings were over the wording of the bill, and there was “absolutely” no promise of the law being signed with changes.
