Abdul Fattah al-Sisi officially announced on Wednesday that he will step down from his position as Egypt’s military chief and run for president. Sisi, who held the rank of Field Marshall, is almost universally expected to win the presidential election. He was quoted earlier this month saying he could "not turn his back on calls by the majority of Egyptians" for him to run for president. His opponents, however, have charged him with major human rights abuses and fear his rule will be a return to authoritarianism in Egypt.
